Whether you’ve recently moved or are unhappy with your current dentist, here are some tips for finding a dentist who’s not only professionally qualified but can meet your specific needs:

• Ask your friends and neighbors: If a dentist is recommended by other patients, chances are you’ll be satisfied, too.
• Ask your former dentist: Like other professionals, dentists have extensive networks of associates, friends and alumni who can help you find a good dentist.
• Seek help from local professionals: Call your local hospital or medical center to get the names of attending dentists—dentists whose credentials are periodically reviewed by the institution and who are granted the privilege of treating patients there.
• Call a dental school: Dentists who teach others, whether at an accredited dental school or a hospital with a dental residency program, are often well qualified to provide treatment themselves.
• Consult your ADA branch: The American Dental Association, or ADA, has branch societies in every state and can provide you with a list of members in your area.
