12 Sep 5 Ways to Ease your Fear of the Dentist
It’s not just kids who fear the dentist. It is actually very common among adults. In fact, 20% of Americans claimed that they only go to the dentist if it’s very urgent, due to their fear of the dentist. The dental anxiety statistics reinforce those claims. So if you’re one of them, here are some tips on how to manage your anxiety when visiting the dentist:
1. Bring a friend or someone you’re comfortable with
Everything in life is easier when you have a support system. So why not bring your favorite person to your dentist appointment? They can cheer you on as you brave through your nightmare cavity appointment.
2. Bring soothing music
You can always bring earphones and play your favorite tunes as you’re braving through your appointment. You can even listen to meditation or nature sounds. You can get lost in your thoughts instead of freaking out every second your dentist picks up a tool.
3. Pray or Meditate
This can definitely take your mind off things. If you have ever fallen asleep during yoga before, you can use the same technique during your dentist appointment. Just breathe, envision you’re somewhere nice, maybe a beach in Fiji. Or just say a little prayer to ease your mind.
4. Find a dentist you like
Having a dentist you’re comfortable with is really important. One of the best things about dentists is that they cam occasionally chat with you to take your mind off your fear. Trust is the most important factor and being able to put your trust into your dentist can largely diminish your fear.
5. Bring a comforting object
Bring a stress ball or a fidget spinner or anything else you’re comfortable with. Anytime you’re feeling scared or anxious during your appointment, you can turn to your object and drastically reduce your fear.
