23 Feb Is Dental Insurance Biting The Dust?
With the state of our economy, people have been cutting costs. Luxuries can be few and far between, but when did health insurance become a luxury? Not only are people taking a chance without health insurance, they have given up dental insurance too. Is this really a loss? You may be thinking that most people don’t come out on top and you may be right. Dental insurance is meant to cover you for worst case scenarios. Even if you have coverage, once you meet the maximum, the rest is out of pocket. Not to mention, most companies only cover up to 80% and leave the rest up to you.
Here are some numbers to consider: In a good year, when you only need preventative care, like cleanings and x-rays, you will spend around $400. With insurance coverage and co-pays, you will end up spending around $600. If you need any kind of work done (fillings, root canal or crowns), you will quickly hit your max. The good news is that you may be able to negotiate a better rate since you have coverage.
If you’re thinking of waiting until you need work done, think again. There are usually probationary periods for certain types of work. If we could outsmart the insurance companies, they wouldn’t be a profitable business.
If you’re stuck between a rock and hard place with this decision, weigh the pros and cons. Give your dentist a call and see if they have any recommendations. They work with these companies every day and may have much better insight than you do. Always read the fine print and ask lots of questions, so you know what you are getting for your hard earned money.
