Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is a sophisticated imaging technology that provides a highly detailed, three-dimensional view of your entire oral and maxillofacial structure. While traditional digital periapical x-rays offer a flat, 2D image of a few teeth, a CBCT scan captures your teeth, jawbone, soft tissues, and nerve pathways in a single, comprehensive scan. This level of detail opens up a new dimension of diagnostic capability for our dentists.
This case highlights how our investment in advanced diagnostic technology was crucial for uncovering a serious underlying issue that a standard X-ray missed, ultimately saving the patient from more severe complications.
A patient visited us for a routine exam, mentioning only slight, intermittent discomfort in their upper right jaw. A standard periapical X-ray (first image) appeared relatively normal and didn’t reveal any obvious cause for concern. However, given the patient’s symptoms, we knew a closer look was necessary.
To get the full picture, we utilized our Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scanner. This powerful 3D imaging tool revealed what the 2D X-ray couldn’t: a very large infection around the second molar.
The CBCT scan showed the infection was far more extensive than suspected. It had not only compromised the second molar but had also infiltrated the sinus cavity, leading to a total sinus infection and affecting the first molar as well.
This definitive diagnosis allowed us to create a comprehensive treatment plan. The patient was referred to an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist for sinus surgery. We then proceeded with the necessary extraction of both affected molars to completely remove the source of the infection.
After a four-month healing period, the patient returned to our office. We placed two dental implants to serve as a stable foundation for their new teeth (second image).
Three months later, we completed the restoration with two custom-milled crowns (third image). The final result is a seamless, functional, and beautiful smile. The patient is now completely free of infection and discomfort and is doing great.
