Are You Suffering From Gum Disease?

Gum Disease SymptomsYou can be suffering from gum disease and not even know it; it can be difficult to recognize because periodontal (gum) disease does not provide many recognizable symptoms during the disease’s early stages. Due to this, many adults in the United States have some form of gum disease, and most may suffer from a mild form of the disease and not even realize it.

Many don’t realize that the term periodontitis, gum disease, and gingivitis are all names for the same disease; it’s just that each term relates to the severity of the disease. For instance, any condition that features unhealthy gums is referred to as gum disease; red, swollen gums that bleed easily is considered to be a mild form of gum disease called gingivitis. While periodontitis is considered to be a severe form of gum disease that usually results in lost teeth.

With knowledge this disease preventable and is easily treatable during its early stages, but it is necessary to know what symptoms to look for. If you are suffering from any of the following, you should try to receive treatment right away, as it may be a sign you have periodontal disease:

  • Loose or sensitive teeth
  • White spots or plaques on gums
  • Gums that seem to bleed easily
  • A change in the way dental appliances fit in your mouth
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Chronic bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
  • Gums that pull away from the teeth, forming pockets; this can make the teeth appear larger

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from gum disease. But don’t fret! Seeking treatment as soon as possible will prevent loss of teeth, and will allow your dentist to come up with an appropriate treatment plan. Luckily, the mild forms of gum disease can usually be fixed by correcting your daily oral hygiene habits; by brushing your teeth regularly, flossing, and by visiting the dentist for annual checkups and teeth cleaning.
