6 Dental Health Resolutions for the New Year

The New Year is approaching, and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about your resolutions for 2017. It’s not uncommon for people to choose resolutions that are centered on their appearances and other personal goals, but most people don’t think about their teeth. It’s not uncommon for a person to have a habit that is harmful to their teeth and not realize it. So for the New Year, put your teeth and smile on the top of your list of resolutions for 2017.

1. Avoid or Limit Soda Intake

Soda is acidic and high in sugar, and together they form a deadly combination. There is a direct correlation between the amount of tooth decay a person has and the amount of sugar that they consume. Plus, the acidity of soda will eat away the enamel on your teeth, so start saying no to soda.

2. Invest in a Tongue Cleaner

You never realize how much gunk your tongue accumulates until you clean your tongue. Investing in a tongue scraper and using it when you brush your teeth will make the world of difference for your mouth. Aim to clean your tongue once a day.

3. Quit Smoking

To quit smoking may already be on your list, but if it isn’t and you are a smoker, make sure to include this as one of your resolutions. Smoking is not only linked to a host of health issues but according to the CDC, smoking cigarettes will also double your chance of developing gum disease.

4. Remember, Your Teeth are Not Tools

Your teeth were not designed to be used as tools, so don’t treat them as such. Using your teeth to open bottles and bags can damage any dental work you have done and can crack your teeth. Remember, your teeth were not designed for this!

5. Have Good Dental Hygiene

As we age it can get harder to develop a routine, and if you don’t have dental hygiene scheduled into your daily routine, you should strongly consider adding this resolution to your list. Regularly brushing and flossing your teeth is imperative if you want to have a healthy smile.

6. See Your Dentist

Taking preventative measures is essential, especially as you age. One of the best ways to do this is to develop a relationship with your dentist and schedule annual visits. Regularly seeing your dentist is one of the most important things you can do when looking after the health of your mouth.
